Gene Shell

Raymond Gene Shell, Marshfield, was born on March 7, 1942, in Leesville, Louisiana, to Jack and Virgie (Spears) Shell. He departed this life on August 18, 2025, in Cox South Hospital, Springfield, at the age of 83.

Gene was united in marriage to Virginia “Sue” Caffey in July of 1993.

Gene worked on off-shore oil rigs in the 70’s and 80’s, advancing to a master mechanic there.  He later worked for the US Civil Service as a mechanic, eventually retiring as a fleet manager for the federal government after many years of service.

Gene was a talented singer, songwriter, and guitar player, having played in country and gospel bands, including "God's Country" in the past. He was mechanically gifted and enjoyed working on cars and anything mechanical.  When people would remark about his talents, he would always say, “I can fix anything but a broken heart”.  Gene loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and his dogs.  His love of animals was lifelong, and he and Sue rescued many pups over the years to give them a second chance and provided them with the most luxurious life a dog could have.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

Gene is survived by his wife Sue Shell of the home, four children, Amanda Shell, Jennifer Nixon and husband Jason, Roger Smith and wife Carrie, and Toni Tucker and husband Josh, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be at a later date under the direction of Fraker Funeral Home, Inc., Marshfield. Interment will be in Lonesome Hill Cemetery, Phillipsburg, Missouri.

For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri and left in care of Fraker Funeral Home, Inc., P.O. Box 85, Marshfield, MO, 65706.
