Kathryn A. "Kay" Winegard
It is with great sadness that the family of Kathryn A. “Kay” Winegard announces her passing from a respiratory illness. She was 88 and was preceded in death by her husband Dick Winegard.
She was born on the summer solstice June 21, 1937 and died on the winter solstice of this year December 21, 2025. She is survived by two children, Renée Marie Winegard of Springfield and Richard Blair Winegard and his wife Lauren of Marshfield, eight grandchildren Grant (Laura), Rachel (Austin), Derrick, Nikki (Dalton), Alex (Kaitlyn), Ragan, Abby, and Ben, and six great-grandchildren Wrenly, Elise, Rorie, Axle, Charlie, and Sylvan.
Kay was born to Martin Leo and Mary Henrietta (Dedman) McCord in Burlington, Iowa, the oldest of three children. Her parents, stepmother Clara Mae McCord, sister Elizabeth “Bette” Schemmel, and brother Richard “Dick” McCord all preceded her in death. She graduated high school from Burlington Catholic High School and received an Associate of Arts degree from Central Methodist College, where she worked in the Registrar’s Office from 1972 until 2018, becoming the registrar in 1984. She was awarded Registrar Emerita in May before her retirement in June of 2018.
In the 1960s, she met and married Dick in Burlington, and they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas where he attended the University of Arkansas, getting his graduate degrees of MA and PhD. She attended a few classes herself and worked in the Registrar’s office while being mother to Renée and Blair. They moved to Fayette, Missouri when Dick graduated and accepted his lifetime position as a professor in the English department at CMC. In 2018, Kay and Dick moved to Marshfield to be close to their children and grandchildren.
Kay loved her job and the people that she worked with and did not want to retire. She also loved to read historical romance novels, and was active in several local groups through the years, including PEO. She was an expert seamstress, making many of her beautiful clothes. She was adept at many types of needlework such as counted cross stitch, crochet, and needlepoint. Her favorite color was red, including her favorite lipstick called Love That Red. Her lifetime goal from high school was to visit all 48 states in the US mainland, which she was proud to accomplish. Her love of travel also allowed her to visit England, Scotland, Wales, and Greece with the CMC college Janaway program and later France and Canada.
Her family will forever miss her beauty, style, and flair, but most of all her love of family.
Services will be held at a later date in Fayette at Walnut Ridge Cemetery. No donations are necessary, but contributions can be made to the Richard C. and Kathryn A. Winegard Scholarship through Central Methodist University.
Arrangements are under the care of Fraker Funeral Home, Inc., Marshfield, Missouri.
